Medi-Cal Birth Reports

These Medi-Cal Birth Statistics Reports include detailed statistics and analyses on California resident births that occurred in a hospital setting during the 2007-2011 calendar years. Analyses in these reports are focused on mothers covered by Medi-Cal and its associated health care delivery systems, as well as mothers covered by private insurance or other public funding sources, and the uninsured. The reports identify factors that may contribute to variations in birth outcomes, and provide useful comparisons between the birth outcomes of Medi-Cal beneficiaries and other births in the state.

The reports are separated into sections for quick and easy access to information on different subject areas, including Medi-Cal population characteristics, maternal demographics, birth characteristics, maternal comorbidities and health behaviors, and adverse birth outcomes.

DHCS gathered data for these reports using Birth Statistical Master Files maintained by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), hospital discharge files from the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD), Medi-Cal inpatient hospital claims, and Medi-Cal eligibility records from the Medi-Cal Eligibility Determination System (MEDS).

The Medi-Cal Births Statistics report replaces the Medi-Cal Funded Deliveries report, which had been published annually between 1994 and 2005. Copies of the older reports can be accessed using the "Archive" link below.
