Medi-Cal Expenditures on Behalf of HIV-Infected Beneficiaries January 1997 - December 1998 Report Date: May 1, 1999

This report is based on information gleaned from Medi-Cal claims paid on behalf of persons believed to be infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV-infected).  Claims paid during the months July 1994 through December 1998 were reviewed for International Classification of Disease (ICD-9) diagnosis codes of 042, 043, 044, or a prescription claim for any of the following drugs: AZT, Cidofovir, Combivir, ddC, ddI, delavirdine, indinavir, lamivudine, nelfinavir, nevirapine, ritonavir, saquinavir, stavudine.

Once a person met the selection criteria, all claims paid on the beneficiary's behalf during calendar years 1997 and 1998 were placed into a research file and utilized for this report.  Expenditures prior to 1997 can be found in our previous report.  A total of 45,373 persons were included in the study.  On the average, about 19,730 of these persons were eligible for Medi-Cal during any one month.
