​Medi-Cal Dental Program

The Medi-Cal Dental Program covers a variety of dental services for Medi-Cal beneficiaries, such as:
  • Diagnostic and preventive dental hygiene (e.g. examinations, x-rays, and teeth cleanings);
  • Emergency services for pain control;
  • Tooth extractions;
  • Root canal treatments;
  • Prosthetic appliances; and
  • Orthodontics for children who qualify.


Beneficiaries can access dental services through Denti-Cal enrolled providers, who will advise beneficiaries on the best course of treatment, and under the specific conditions for which some of these services are allowable.  If you have any questions or need assistance finding a dentist, call the Beneficiary Customer Service Line at 1-800-322-6384.

Proposition 56 Supplemental Payments 

On November 8, 2016, California voters approved the California Healthcare, Research and Prevention Tobacco Tax Act (commonly known as Prop. 56) to increase the excise tax rate on cigarettes and tobacco products. Under Prop. 56, a specified portion of the tobacco tax revenue is allocated to DHCS for use as the nonfederal share of health care expenditures in accordance with the annual state budget process. As detailed in the State Plan Amendment notice linked below, the proposed supplemental payment categories for dental services will include restorative, endodontic, prosthodontic, oral and maxillofacial, adjunctive, and visits and diagnostic services. The Supplemental payment will be at a rate equal to 40 percent of the Dental Schedule of Maximum Allowances (SMA) for the specified codes for the dates of service during the period of July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2018. The specified codes are listed in the attachment below.
 


 

Dental Transformation Initiative​​​​​

Within the Medi-Cal 2020 Waiver, the Dental Transformation Initiative (DTI) represents a critical strategy to improve dental health for eligible Medi-Cal children by focusing on high-value care, improved access, and utilization of performance measures to drive delivery system reform.
