Home Upkeep Allowance
The Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) has prepared an informational notice in 12 threshold languages that describes the Medi-Cal Home Upkeep Allowance (HUA). It is available to individuals who reside in nursing homes or other medical care facilities and meet certain requirements. DHCS provides this service so advocate groups can distribute the notice to targeted populations.
The HUA establishes the amount of income that qualifying institutionalized individuals may retain for the upkeep and maintenance of their homes. It is currently set at $209 per month. In order to qualify for the HUA, individuals must meet several requirements (see Section 50605 of Title 22 of the California Code of Regulations), including a verified medical determination from their physician stating that the individual will be able to return home within six months of the date of institutionalization.
