CalAIM: Transforming Medi-Cal

Address California’s physical and mental health needs

Medi-Cal is providing improved comprehensive preventive and personalized care that spans the physical and mental health needs of Californians. We’re strengthening mental health and substance use disorder services and better integrating them with physical health care.

New services will help members address health-related social needs that can impact their health, like help getting and keeping housing and accessing medically tailored meals to support a member’s short term recovery.

Improve and integrate care for Californians

There are a number of initiatives under the Medi-Cal transformation umbrella, including those under the CalAIM waiver, that will standardize, simplify, and streamline how members across the state access health care, no matter where they live. Medi-Cal is working to better integrate and coordinate care for members who are dually enrolled in both Medicare and Medi-Cal or have complex or long-term care needs.

Be a catalyst for equity and justice

The transformation of Medi-Cal is a key building block of California’s broader commitment to building a healthier and more equitable state for all Californians, regardless of their ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, immigration status, health needs, or where they live. Medi-Cal is providing new services designed to address racial and ethnic disparities in the health care system. Black and Latino Californians have long faced health disparities that are the result of longstanding, structural racism in the health care, housing, employment, immigration and criminal justice systems.

Work together to build a healthier state

The bold transformation of Medi-Cal requires the commitment of a broad network of partners, including health plans, providers, and community-based organizations. With this transformation, DHCS is leading the nation in providing Californians with access to the care they need.
