About California State Medicaid Director Tyler Sadwith

Tyler Sadwith was appointed State Medicaid Director at the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) by Governor Gavin Newsom in March 2024. As State Medicaid Director and Chief Deputy Director, Health Care Programs at DHCS, Mr. Sadwith represents California’s Medicaid program (Medi-Cal) with federal partners at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. He provides strategic direction and oversight for Medi-Cal, serving more than 14 million vulnerable Californians. 

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Sadwith served as Deputy Director, Behavioral Health at DHCS from 2022 until March 2024 and Assistant Deputy Director, Behavioral Health from 2021 until 2022. 

Previously, he was a Senior Consultant for Technical Assistance Collaborative, Inc. Mr. Sadwith held several positions at the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, including Technical Director. Mr. Sadwith earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Reed College.
