Updated Medi-Cal Requirements for Ordering/Referring/Prescribing Provider Forms and Procedures

On Tuesday, June 9, 2026, the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) will hold a public hearing via webinar to discuss updates to the draft regulatory provider bulletin titled, “Updated Medi-Cal Requirement for Ordering/Referring/Prescribing Providers Forms and Procedures.”

Effective July 23, 2026, providers who order, refer, or prescribe services to Medi-Cal members and are enrolled in Medicare must also enroll separately in Medi-Cal to comply with federal and state requirements. Enrollment in Medicare alone does not satisfy the requirement for participation in California’s Medi-Cal program for the sole purpose of ordering, referring, or prescribing. In order to enroll in the Medi-Cal program for the sole purpose of ordering, referring or prescribing, providers must submit an electronic application through the online provider enrollment application system, along with all supporting documentation. Failure to enroll will result in denial of claims where the ordering, referring, or prescribing provider’s National Provider Identifier (NPI) is not associated with an active Medi-Cal enrollment.

Please see the provider bulletin (effective July 23, 2026) for more information.
