Create an Event
DHCS WordPress Training Guide
Events are a custom post type in WordPress. When an event is created and approved, it automatically appears in the Events widget on the site.
Step 1: Navigate to Events
- From the Admin Menu, go to Events → Add New.
Step 2: Use Simple Page Layout
- Choose Simple Page Layout for consistency.
- Add:
- Title: The name of the event.
- Heading 1: Usually the event title again or a descriptive heading.
- Description: Include details about the event, agenda, and any materials.
Step 3: Enter Event Settings
- In the Settings → Events tab (right sidebar):
- Event Date: Use the date picker.
- Start Time: e.g., 2:00 p.m.
- End Time: e.g., 3:00 p.m.
- Event Type: Select from available types (e.g., Webinar, Meeting).
- Audience: Choose who the event is for (current options: Individuals & Families, Partners, Providers).
- Topic: Select relevant topics.
- Program (optional): Decide if this is needed—users may not know program names.
- Division: Likely not needed for filtering—agree to omit if possible.
Step 4: Add Buttons
- Use button blocks for actions:
- [Register] for events requiring registration.
- [Join Webinar] for events without registration.
Step 5: Add Additional Details
- Include agenda or meeting materials as needed.
- Add links to files (using the file linking method we covered earlier).
Step 6: Workflow
- Save as Draft until ready.
- Submit for OC Review.
- Once approved, the event will appear in the Events widget automatically.
Important Behavior:
- The date entered in the sidebar automatically displays on the page—you don’t need to manually add it.
- Users will filter events by:
- When (date)
- Audience
- Topic
- Event Type
