On January 12, 2026, DHCS, in partnership with the UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies, will launch a free, self-paced, and asynchronous online 80-hour training program for substance use disorder (SUD) counselors. Registration is available on UC San Diego Extended Studies’ website. The Advancing SUD Counselor Education and Development Program (ASCEND) Program was developed with UC San Diego Extended Studies and the Assembly Bill 2473 Stakeholder Advisory Group as part of DHCS’ ongoing efforts to support the SUD workforce. These courses feature expert instruction from experienced professionals to empower SUD counselors to support others on their recovery journey. The ASCEND Program is approved by the California Association of DUI Treatment Programs to count toward a SUD Certified Counselor credential.
