Drug Use Review Board Member Recruitment
Global Medi-Cal Drug Use Review (DUR) Board Recruitment - Health Care Professionals
August 1, 2023
The Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), Pharmacy Benefits Division (PBD) is currently recruiting a pediatrician with active practice in California to participate on the Global Medi-Cal Drug Use Review (DUR) board.
Since 1993, section 1927(g) of the Act has required each state to develop a DUR program targeted, in part, at reducing clinical abuse and misuse of outpatient prescription drugs covered under the State's Medicaid Program. Medi-Cal DUR is a structured, ongoing program that interprets patterns of drug use in Medi-Cal programs and includes prospective drug review, retrospective drug use review, data assessment of drug use against predetermined standards, and ongoing educational outreach activities.
Consistent with 42 CFR §438.3(s)(4) and (5) the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) requires any Managed Care Organization (MCO) that includes covered outpatient drugs to operate a DUR program that complies with section 1927(g)(3)(D) and 42 CFR 456, subpart K. The MCO DUR program must be as comprehensive as the states Fee-for-Service (FFS) program. Federal rules require that each state Medicaid program include a comprehensive Drug Use Review (DUR) program to improve drug use by ensuring that prescriptions are appropriate, medically necessary, and not likely to result in adverse medical results.
Central to the DUR program is the Global Medi-Cal DUR Board, which is an advisory body that includes volunteer pharmacists and physicians with active practices in California. The Board advises and makes recommendations to the State on common drug therapy problems, develops criteria to evaluate and improve the quality of drug therapy, reviews evaluations and utilization reports, and recommends educational interventions, as needed, in order to improve prescribing and dispensing practices. For additional information about the Global Medi-Cal DUR Board, please review the Frequently Asked Questions.
If you are interested in serving as a DUR board member, please submit the following required documents: your Curriculum Vitae/Resume (not to exceed 3 pages) and Statement of Qualifications to DURBoardApplications@dhcs.ca.gov no later than October 15, 2023.
