Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness

Encouraging all Californians to raise awareness about mental health and improving access to mental health services is a critical component of the Department of Health Care Services’ missionRaising awareness reduces the stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness and seeking treatment. Without treatment, mental health disorders can reach a crisis point. As the World Health Organization states, “there is no health without mental health.”

With an estimated 44 million adults and 17 million young people in the United States experiencing a mental illness each year, the need for effective strategies and approaches to educate Californians on the early signs of mental illness and how to access mental health services is critical. California has a wide variety of culturally competent, prevention and early intervention treatment services that embrace wellness and recovery. DHCS encourages everyone experiencing a mental health challenge to talk to a mental health professional. Asking for help is a sign of strength and the first step towards achieving mental wellness.
